Hardback, rebound in half-leather with five raised bands and gilt titling to spine, marbled page edges, boards and endpapers. 21.5 x14.5cm. vii, ii, 560pp. This book collects Charles Knight's critical notices from his Pictorial Edition of Shakespeare. An general introduction on drama and Shakespeare's times is followed by text on all the plays and poems as well as contemporaries of Shakespeare's and his critics. The book has a frontispiece formed of five portraits of Shakespeare. Condition: This copy is in very good condition. The rebinding has been done to a high standard. There is some foxing between the frontis and title page, but the main body of text has clean pages and secure binding. There are a few loose newspaper clippings etc at the rear of the book.
