Frankfurt: Heinrich Remigius Sauerlander, 1858. Deluxe Edition. Full leather. Very good. Presentation copy of Studen der Andacht zur from Queen Victoria to her son, Prince Arthur.. Octavo, 8-volumes. Black leather, raised bands, title in gilt on spine. All gilt leaf ends. Marbled endpapers. Royal coat of arms bookplate affixed to front of Volume 1. Signed by Queen Victoria to Prince Arthur: "To dearest Arthur, In the names of both his Parents Albert & Victoria R, in recollection of Sunday, Apr: 29, 1866, from his loving & sorrowing Mama, V.R., Osborn. Apr: 29, 1866." Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was born on May 1, 1850, at Buckingham Palace. In 1866, Arthur made his confirmation at Whippingham Church in Newport, Isle of Wright.Arthur served in the British Army, rising to the rank of Field Marshal. He held various military appointments throughout his career. In 1911, he was appointed Governor General of Canada, serving until 1916. He was the first member of the British royal family to hold the post. Prince Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia in 1879, with whom he had three children. He died on January 16, 1942, the last surviving child of Queen Victoria.
