Until May 1991 David Miller was a serving officer in the British Army, a career which took him to Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, the Falkland Islands, and Holland, and which has included service in the Royal Corps of Signals, several staff assignments at Army headquarters and the command of a regiment in the United Kingdom. On leaving the Army, he became a full-time author specializing in military and technical subjects. He has contributed numerous articles to defense journals on subjects ranging from guerrilla warfare to missile strategy, and is the author of a number of books. A fully illustrated history of the growth and development of the submarine as a major weapon of war, from the introduction of the first submarines into service through the U-boats of the First and Second World Wars to the mighty nuclear-powered missile subs that dominate the underwater world today. In this book, the author surveys the entire history of submarine development, charting the milestones in the story and providing details of some seventy classes of submarine, which have been carefully selected to represent a cross-section of the boats to have seen service. the majority of the entries are shown on double-page spreads and are illustrated by a superb selections of color artwork and dramatic photographs.
