About This Item
1698 PASCAL Pensees + Caracteres of Theophrastus French Philosophy Louis XIV
Jean de La Bruyère was a 17th-century French philosopher best-known for his book 'The Caracteres'. This philosophical 'novel' – a loose translation of Theophrastus maxims and sketches – was written to expose the corruption of the reign of Louis XIV by identifying the mental characteristics of people. Bruyere wanted to correct people's flaws, particularly those with cruel behaviors or bad manners. This work was heavily influenced by a number of great thinkers, including Montaigne and Pascal.
This 1698 edition appeared only a few years after the first – a book which garnered countless critics and enemies. An important work of French philosophy during the reign of Louis XIV.
