About This Item
Boston: Ginn & Company, 1921 8vo (23.5 cm), [8], 65 pp. Publisher's vellum backed boards and slipcase. Inscribed by the author to Eleanor Witmer with the compliments. From the library of Erwin Tomasz (bookplate). First edition. David Eugene Smith (1860-1944), an American mathematician, educator, and editor, presents a facsimile with the translation on facing pages of "The Sumario Compendioso," the first mathematics book printed in the New World. Originally published in Mexico City in 1556 by the clergyman Juan Diez, a companion of Hernando Cortes, the majority of the book consists of elaborate tables designed to simplify computations in the sale of gold and silver. The remaining portion comprises a concise textbook on arithmetic and six pages of algebra, specifically tailored to meet the needs of apprentices in the counting houses of the New World.
