Boston, New England: Rogers and Fowle, 1749. 1st Edition . Very Good. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.5 x 20 cm). Volume I only, the second volume was issued separately in 1752. Full calf leather binding, rebacked with original spine laid over. Double gilt filet border to boards. Spine has five raised bands, red leather title label, gilt ornaments to compartments. New endpapers, title page is a facsimile and the volume is also lacking leaves Hh3 and Hh4 (pp253-256). Staining to fore edge of title page, creasing and browning to first three leaves. Previous owner's name stamped to last page of Contents. Tear across part of the upper margin of leaf A4. A few occasional small marks but text is in very clean overall condition. Page 464 is misnumbered 456 as expected. This work was originally issued in parts between 1747 and 1749. This volume includes the libellous description of Admiral Sir Charles Knowles in footnote to pages 235-238, ESTC states that this was omitted from most copies of the bound volume. The scarce first edition of a work considered to be the first American history of the whole country. Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.5 x 20 cm). Hardback.
