About This Item

Chicago: Rand, McNally & Company, 1902. Near fine.. First edition of the first book by a major publisher with the iconic Sunbonnet Babies and their coy hidden faces, quite scarce in this condition. Bertha Corbett (later Melcher) self-published two small books of her Sunbonnet Babies illustrations before approaching Rand, McNally & Company in the hopes of finding a wider audience. Grover, one of the editor's sisters and a former elementary school teacher, saw the potential in the characters and collaborated with Corbett to produce this book - which turned out to be the beginning of a phenomenon, with the Sunbonnet Babies appearing on everything from quilts to porcelains. A terrific copy. 9'' x 6.75''. Original tan pictorial cloth. Green pictorial endpapers with music by W.H. Neidlinger. Illustrated by Corbett in color throughout. 105, [1] pages. Slight soil to boards.
