Gorgeous photographs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, taken primarily in Memphis. Withers photographed the clubs, dance halls, auditoriums, recording studios, churches and streets of Memphis, home to one of the most vibrant music scenes in America. Subjects include W.C. Handy, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, a young Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, James Brown, Charlie Pride, Rufus Thomas, Staples Singers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ike and Tina Turner, Isaac Hayes and many more. Ricou Browning gained fame as playing "The Creature", aka Gill-man, in the cult horror film classic "Creature From the Black Lagoon". This 8 inch by 10 inch color photograph portrays him as The Creature. The photo is matted and framed, and and is autographed by Ricou Browning. Tenants of building (as per signs) include: Union Bank of Australia, Alex Brown Colliery, Belgian & US Consulate, New Lambton Colliery Indemnity Fire and Machinery Insurance, Hewison Shipping Insurance & General Commission Agent. According to Newcastle Library records these businesses were located in a bank building in Newcastle, but pictorial records depict a different building. It would seem highly coincidental if these same businesses were located at the same time in nearby East Maitland or Morpeth, but remains a possibility. No other pictorial records can be located..
