About This Item
London: William Heinemann , 1921. Limited First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. No. 88 of 275 limitation, signed by Beerbohm on limitation page. Plus preserved is the seldom encountered DJ. 4to. 26 by 19 cm. 52 plates of the famous and celebrated, many of whom were among the literati, with a few politicians thrown in, as well as a few with no known personage but satirizing some current in society. Thus found here are unforgettable send-ups of Lloyd George, Gordon Craig, Sidney Webb, Lord Balfour, Lytton Strachey, and many others. But also in this collection are caricatures cleverly treating more abstract subject matter, such as the future as beheld by the 18th century, the 19th century and the 20th century. In the first two of this triplex series Beerbohm is commenting on the lack of human imagination as to what the future may bring. All the drawings have the inimitable Beerbohm style that remains fresh and droll, even when one doesn't necessarily know the subject or fully know what exactly Beerbohm intended to skewer. Captions on tissue guards. Condition: DJ with a few very minor closed tears and tiny edge chips. Now protected by mylar. Overall a beautiful copy.
