About This Item

Paris: YMCA Press, [1927]. First edition (presumed); 5 x 7 1/2; pp. [2], 5-55, [1] including text to last page; stiff pictorial wraps; minor wrinkle to tail of spine and lower right corner; deckled page edges; in about near fine condition. Anna Gippius, younger sister of poet and co-founder of Russian Symbolism Zinaida Gippius, graduated medical school before immigrating in the post-Revolution years - first to Constantinople and later to Paris. Once among the Russian immigrant community in France, Anna devoted her time to religious and literary activities. Most of her writings on Christian Saints and the Eastern Orthodox religion, including the present biography of the Bishop of Voronezh Tikhon Zadonskii, were published abroad. She died in 1942 of malnutrition during the Nazi occupation. It has been speculated that Anna's death was one of the last devastating blows to her sister Zinaida, causing the latter to contemplate suicide for a while and ultimately to die two and a half years later.
