About This Item
New York, London, Bombay: Longmans, Green and Co., 1899. Haggard was one of the best factual reporters on the Boer War; this adventure novel is set much earlier, during the Trek of 1836. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, which precedes that of the UK (which is more common). Tan cloth binding, ruled on the front cover, with a fancy title decoration in red, green, and gilt. The design is repeated on the spine; "Haggard" in green, "Longmans" in gilt. Clean text; ix, 348 pages, with 24 pages of publisher adverts in the rear. Frontis illustration and eleven others (four more than the UK edition). Mild bumps; spine has darkened; rubbed at margins; soiling to the surfaces. Not a beauty, but a solid copy of an uncommon title by the prolific author.. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
