[SWASEY FAMILY]. Swasey family guest book (signed by Ambrose Swasey & many others), oblong 8vo, full leather, 27 pages used, others blank. [Exeter, New Hampshire] January 1, 1929-October 7, 1936.

A Swasey familly guest book, apparently presented before the first entry therein by Laurence and Marion Swasey, inscribed to their uncle, a great American mechanical engineer: "Merry Christmas to Uncle Ambrose [Swasey (see DAB)] from Laurence and Marion 1928." Ambrose Swasey (1846-1937), his wife, and six friends from New Hampshire, signed the book on Oct. 24, 1933. The names of a number of people appear more than once. Notables include John R. Freeman, engineer, author of Earthquake Damage, Earthquake Insurance (1932); Samuel W. Stratton, physicist & president of M.I.T., and his assistant Morris A Parris; Charles A. Barbour, president of Brown University; Charles W, Yater, noted Washington, DC, doctor; John Stanley Plaskett, Canadian astronomer (2x); Otis G. Hammond, New Hampshire historian and director of the New Hampshire Historical Society; Samuel C. Prescott, scientist, Dean of Sciences at M.I.T.; Calvin Rice, secretary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Harlan T. Stetson, director of the Perkins Observatory, Ohio Wesleyan University; William Wallace Campbell, astronomer, pioneer of astronomical spectroscopy, director of the Lick Observatory; Robert J. Trumpler, astronomer at the Lick Observatory, for whom an award is named; their wives and children; William Gerry Morgan, M.D. (1868-1949), gastroenterologist, dean of Georgetown University School of Medicine; Calvin Winsor Rice, first full-time director of The American Society of Electrical Engineers; Yü gwan Chen (b. 1893), Chinese educator, physicist, president of Nanjing University, president of the Chinese Chemical Society, awarded the Columbia University Medal; John Ripley Freeman, civil and hydraulic engineer who designed and built the Chelsea River Dam in Boston; Samuel Wesley Stratton, physicist, educator, administrator in the American government; Otis G. Hammond, historian, director of the New Hampshire Historical Society for 31 years; Harlan True Stetson, astronomer and physicist; Jason John Nassau, astronomer; and many others.
