This is a nice condition antique copy of "Sweetser's WHITE MOUNTAINS - A Handbook for Travellers" - compiled by M.F. Sweetser. 1895; Houghton, Mifflin and Company; Boston and New York. The book features numerous fold-out maps ("six maps and six panoramas, including the new Appalachian-Club map"). With an Index and many advertisements at the front and back. "A guide to the peaks, passes, and ravines of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and to the adjacent railroads, highways, and villages; With the lakes and mountains of western Maine; Also, Lake Winnipesaukee, and the upper Connecticut valley."
From the Preface: "The main object of this Handbook is to supply the summer-tourist with such information as may render his visit to the White Mountains both pleasant and profitable. The villages and hotels among the mountains have been described with care, and the routes in their vicinity have also been explained. Accounts of the more remote and lofty peaks have been added, to open new fields to adventurous mountaineers. It is hoped that hotel-keepers, summer correspondents, and guides, and may be enabled to enjoy to the fullest extent the magnificent scenery of the hill-country of New England."
Condition:
Light soiling to the covers and spine; sharp corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The inside of the book is in terrific condition - clean with only some light foxing to outer edge of the copyright page and the opposing "Supplement" page. All maps are present, intact, and securely attached. Overall a very nice copy.
