China c. 9-23 A.D. A Chinese spade coin, 5.5 cm. tall by ca. 2.5 cm. wide, with four Chinese characaters on the front, a round hole at the top center, verso blank, with usual center line, very good, old patina, characters crisp, sharp image. Early examples of ritualistic Chinese "spade" or Pu coin. This is an excellent and well preserved casted coin, done in the traditional shape, with four characters: "TA PU HUANG CH'IEN" in seal script, read croswise, large coin Pu worth 1000. Huang is said to be used for Heng. This coin & its in- scription is pictured in the very rare, reliable & scholarly work by J.S. Lockhart THE STEWARD LOCKHART COLLECTION OF CHINESE COOPPER COINS, Shanghai 1915, Kelly Walsh on p.37 as example #159 the descriptive text on p.5. Verso without ado- rnment. These coins were casted & minted under Emperor Wang Mang. . R A R E ! .
