About This Item

St Petersburg, Obshchina Sviatoi Evgenii, 1910. . Landscape poster (36.5 x 28 cm); chromolithograph designed by Bilibin and dated 1910, pasted on to board, small loss of paper to top border, minor stain to right margin, wear to corners, a very bright and fresh example.
A scarce and impressive piece of ephemera designed by Bilibin. The central panel features the most important religious saint days and feasts topped with the sun and moon and tailed with a winged hourglass. The two side panels contain the twelve zodiacs along with men representing each month of the year. Each figure is wonderfully adorned and illustrated with symbols reflecting the season. For example, the summer months carry flowers, a scythe, wheat, and fruit whilst December and January depict Christmas and Epiphany.

The calendar is in the typical 'Bilibin' style of a magical and colourful world, firmly rooted in the stylised form of Russian folk and medieval art. As the very nature of calendars are ephemeral, examples of this work are incredibly rare. We could only locate one copy, at the State Museum of History of St Petersburg.
