bookplate of the Comte de Moüy to the sfep, verso of ffep with ink note from the Comte de Moüy in French, dated 1860, saying that these volumes were given to his mother in 1828 by the old Count of Erlach, former Swiss Guard to Louis XVI; Robert MacKenzie Waggaman bookplate to front pastedowns; text in French;

Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859) was a Scottish statesman and historian, associated with the government of British India. In 1808 he was appointed the first British envoy to the court of Kabul, Afghanistan, with the object of securing a friendly alliance with the Afghans against Napoleon's planned advance on India.
