About This Item
Paris, 1783. Book. Near Fine. Full Leather. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First French edition. "Avec Permission." No publisher. (First published in Amsterdam, 1781). Rebound in speckled full calf, 6 compartments, raised ridges, gold on leather labels. Pages topstained red. Brown marble endpapers. [iv], 272, [iv] 270 pp. Numbered 494 on half title. Volume I is a description of the situation of the British colonies in North America; Volume II is a reprint of Raynal's work on the American Revolution. Reynal was a radical in his time, a supporter of the revolution, whose 6-volume work on the history of the European colonies in the Americas and the Indies (1770) was indexed by the Roman Catholic Church. Raynal was forced into exile in 1781, the year this book was first published in Amsterdam. Two years later it was printed in Paris ("with permission"). Raynal was allowed to return to France, but not to Paris, a year later in 1784. An important work in the understanding of the European response to the American Revolution, prior to the French Revolution..
