San Francisco: Colt Press, 1939 First edition. Limited to 750 copies issued from The Colt Press by Jane Swinerton, William Roth, & Jane Grabhorn. Thin quarto. 67pp. Numerous small illustrations, title printed in red and black. Black cloth-backed light blue boards, paper spine label, decorative label on front cover. Boards discolored, soiled, and lightly rubbing at the corners. Has a cut on the front cover. Previous owner's ink signature. Otherwise a good copy, internally fine. A biographical sketch with an emphasis upon Thomes' contacts with early California and his mastery of a popular literary technique. Part one draws from Thomes' "Recollections of old times in California," part two from his "The Reminiscences of a Gold Hunter" (first published in 1882 in Ballou's Monthly Magazine), and part three from "The Pioneers of '49" by Nicholas Ball (1891)..

The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
