Upper 16mm strip removed from title leaf, without loss of text. Some marginalia. Provenance: Carl R. Staubel, with pencil owner's name "C R Straubel". [Reference: Taylor, "Roll of Book Collectors in New Zealand" p. 33 : "Particular emphasis is placed upon Canterbury material".] ; xii, 208 pages. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 168 x 107mm. [Reference: Bagnall 2662 : "The writer is certainly critical both of New Zealand and propaganda about it and although there are comparisons between Auckland and Wellington, for example, most of the local colour is of Christchurch [. . .] from internal evidence the author appears to have arribed in Christchurch on the Merope in August 1885 and may have been one of the Misses Campbell in the passenger list"]. .
