An undated, probable first Everyman's Library edition (1909) offering satirical essays on a variety of subjects by Ireland's Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), probably best known for his "Gulliver's Travels." Besides the title essays, this collection includes his "The History of Martin," "A Project for the Universal Benefit of Mankind" and several others. Includes an introduction by Lewis Melville. Everyman's Library catalog no. 347, in their Essays and Belles Lettres series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In flatback binding style 1, full ribbed orange cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- With small tears along rear joint and small spot of dark soiling to front cover, else a tightly-bound, unmarked, clean copy.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; xx, 325 pages .
