About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1861. First Edition. First impression. Presumed remainder issue (see note below): octavo, text block measuring 7-1/4"; brown linen, blocked in gilt on spine and front cover, iv,312pp; no publisher's catalog. Slight rubbing to spine (heavier at crown) and board edges; hairline crack to front hinge (internal), Very Good. With the large engraved bookplate of Roger Dow to front pastedown; his ink notes regarding purchase history ("London 23 May 1950") on verso of front endpaper and title page.
SADLEIR 12; see also SADLEIR 16(n): "A curious secondary issue of both series of stories (in separate form) remains to be noted. Copies sometimes appear of the first edition sheets of the books cut down to 4-3/4 x 7-1/4 and bound in a smooth linen...blocked in gold with a frame and a decoration on the side, gold-lettered and gold blocked with a diapered pattern on the spine...the cloth used for these bindings and the style of the blocking are of comparatively late date (probably the 'eighties) and I am inclined to deduce... that a residue of first edition sheets was discovered by the publishers and sold by them to some wholesaler who put on their own cheap quality binding and sold the books at a low price.
