Dmitry Narkisovich Mamin-Sabiryak, born in 1852, was a Russian writer most famous for his novels and short stories about life in the Ural Mountains and in which he lovingly described the ordinary people in their struggles against opression and injustice. His daughter, Alyonushka, grew up without her mother, who had died when she was a baby. The fairy tales that Mamin-Sibiryak told his daughter were later published in book form under the title "Tales for Alyonushka". In these tales the bright colours of a summer day and the lush beauty of the Russian landscape come alive.
