About This Item

Garden City: Hanover House/Doubleday, 1953. Hardcover. Good Plus. Most people today know Joseph Conrad, a Polish native and British emigre, as the writer of great novels in English, works now classics of adventure and sailing, such as "Lord Jim" and "Nostromo." Fewer are aware of the large number of equally fine short stories he created. "Tales of Land and Sea" is a collection of some of Conrad's shorter works, including "Youth," "Brute," "The Secret Sharer," and "The Duel." This Hanover House edition, published nearly 30 years after Conrad's death, collects 12 stories and testifies to his great abilities in the shorter form. It includes an introduction by William McFee and illustrations by Richard M. Powers. First edition thus. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches, 695 pages in black paper-covered boards with cream backstrip and blue lettering on spine. Top edge of text dyed blue-green. Sorry, no dustjacket. Boards show minor freying at top end of spine, bumping at bottom. Bottom corners lightly bumped, o/w boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. Binding tight and square. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Makes a very decent reading/study copy.
