Best known for his ethereal illustrations for fairy tales and classic stories, his art for this volume of is eerie and sometimes gruesome, complimenting Poe's gothic stories. Includes classics like "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Delightfully spooky. 9.75'' x 7.5''. Original red cloth boards with black stamping. Original unclipped ($5.00) color pictorial dust jacket. Red topstain. Pictorial endpapers with skeletons in black and white. Illustrated with color frontispiece with text-printed guardpaper, 11 color plates with text-printed guardpapers, and 17 black-and white plates. 318 pages. Small ink owner name to first blank. Jacket with chipping to top of spine, affecting title, and milder chipping to corners; a few closed tears with corresponding tape repairs to verso; some toning to spine. Jacket front flap and front flyleaf with offsetting from (no longer present) paperclip. Book lovely with only mild edgewear. Sharp.
