About This Item

A scarce third printing of the first American edition [Macmillan NY 1947], warmly inscribed by author James Michener directly on the front free end paper. The book is in very good condition with age-toned paper, bumped corners and some faint soiling to the covers. The book has no remainder marks, a tight and square binding, with no owner inscriptions or highlighting and no staining. The dust jacket is in good-only condition, not price-clipped ($3.00), with creases, chips and tears. It is now protected by an archival cover which is easily removable. Laid into the book is the original packing list from the publisher, detailing the sale of an autographed copy and in the name of the original recipient. Exceptional and very desirable provenance. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.

Synopsis

Tales of the South Pacific is a Pulitzer Prize winning collection of sequentially related short stories about World War II, written by James A. Michener in 1946. The stories were based on observations and anecdotes he collected while stationed as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands (now known as Vanuatu). The skipper of PT-105 met Michener while stationed at the PT boat base on Tulagi in the Solomon Islands.
