About This Item
First English Edition of Conrad's fourth book -- his first collection of short stories (including "An Outpost of Progress," a Congo tale anticipating his later "Heart of Darkness"). The American edition by Scribner's is believed to have come out about ten days earlier. For this U.K. edition Cagle estimates a total printing of about 1,250 copies -- including some later copies with no gilt top edge, plus some copies that were remaindered with a cancel title page and a still later binding (the book did not sell well). This copy is in the primary state (with top edge gilt and wove endpapers), and is in bright, near-fine condition -- a couple of very faint small marks on the spine, but scarcely any wear. TALES OF UNREST is becoming increasingly uncommon in this condition. Cagle A4c.1. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.
Synopsis
Of the five stories in this volume, The Lagoon, the last in order, is the earliest in date. It is the first short story I ever wrote and marks, in a manner of speaking, the end of my first phase, the Malayan phase with its special subject and its verbal suggestions. Conceived in the same mood which produced Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, it is told in the same breath (with what was left of it, that is, after the end of An Outcast), seen with the same vision, rendered in the same method - if such a thing as method did exist then in my conscious relation to this new adventure of writing for print.
