First edition. 8vo; price-clipped pictorial dustwrapper; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. 96, incl. index; plates; text figures. Dustwrapper very slightly creased and partially sunned; cloth a little mottled; a little foxing. Very good condition. Uncommon. "It is the object of this account of the drum languages of Africa to present the findings of ... investigators together with my own experience of drum talking in the Stanleyville area of the Belgian Congo - an area not referred to by other workers. Thus I hope to make it clear that there is no doubt about the possibility of 'talking' on the drum, that messages are sent regularly in many parts of Africa and that there is no mystery whatever in the method used by many skilled Africans to pass on news to their neighbours." An important study of the traditional use of percussion instruments in conveying complex messages over considerable distances in various parts of Africa. The same author's "A comparative study of some Central African gong-languages (Institut Royal Colonial Belge: Mémoires, 1949) is listed in Tenri Africana II (3137). .
