About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Tony HIllerman: Tony Hillerman didn't write a huge number of novels, but his books featuring Navaho policemen Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn are very well known. Eighteen books feature one or both of these crime fighters. Hillerman wrote 11 other books, including a children's book. His daughter, Anne Hillerman, has continued the series, with a bit more focus on a third Navaho officer, Bernie Manuelito, Jim Chee's wife. Talking God is the ninth book in the Chee/Leaphorn series.

Bernard Cornwell: Born in England, now living in the USA, Cornwell is a writer of historical novels, thrillers and mysteries. His best known is the Sharpe series of mysteries, with 22 novels. His Last Kingdom series encompasses 13 novels and he has five other shorter series as well. Altogether, Cornwell has published over 60 books so far. Killer's Wake is also known as Sea Lord.

Thomas H. Cook: American Thomas Cook has published 29 novels, five nonfiction books and at least four collaborations. He has also kept busy editing anthologies. His main genre is mystery, both modern and historical.

Synopsis

Loaded with e-book extras (not available in the print edition), including Tony Hillerman's running commentary on his work and his series heroes Leaphorn and Chee; plus: a special profile of the Navajo nation.A grave robber and a corpse reunite Leaphorn and Chee in a dangerous arena of superstition, ancient ceremony, and living gods.A grave robber and a corpse reunite Navajo Tribal Policemen Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee. As Leaphorn seeks the identity of a murder victim, Chee arrests Smithsonian conservator Henry Highhawk for ransacking the sacred bones of his ancestors. As the layers of each case are peeled away, it becomes shockingly clear that they are connected, that there are mysterious others pursuing Highhawk. Leaphorn and Chee have entered into the dangerous arena of superstition, ancient ceremony, and living gods.
