NY: Harper & Brothers. G. 1923. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Stated first edition with the code "I-X" on the copyright page. Bound in black cloth with gold lettering. There is a color plate pastedown o n the front board. Color illustrations by Charles Chapman and Frank St reet. 7 1/4" x 9 1/2", 253 pages. A Good copy. The front board has thr ee spots of what seems to be white paint along the edges of the cover. The color plate and lettering are not affected. Small rub spots to th e inner bottom edges of the cloth covers. The spine is rubbed and fade d. Small bumps to the corners. The rear board has some dust staining. There is a small, shallow water spot on the bottom edge of the page bl ock that shows in the margins of the first 48 pages and again on the l ast 20 or so pages of text. Former owner's name and date inked on the front fly. Contents are tight, otherwise unmarked. .

The lonely prospector with his faithful companion, the lowly burro, receives the respect and admiration they so richly deserve in the title story in this collection of five short stories or novellas. The character of Tappan is your usual grizzled, haunted by the past, type; but his faithfulness and loyalty to his beloved partner more than makes up for the stereotype. Jenet, the burro, has a most prominent role in the story, and this story is as good as the ones ZG wrote about the lion dog, Don, or the wild stallion, Wildfire. The other stories in this collection are just as good, and these people come to life as only Zane Grey can make it happen. A solid group of tales of adventure ranging from the desert Southwest to the jungles of Central America. I recommend this book most highly.
