About This Item
Washington 1899. (Extract from account 97-44 of the National Museum of History for the year 1897), 8vo. pp 689 – 723. Octavo-size booklet, Original-Wrapper. Scarce item! Report by the Surgeon of the U.S. Ship “Mohican” which visited Easter Island in December 1886. Next to the substantial report by paymaster William Thomson this is the second authentic account by a participant of the Mohican expedition. Our catalogue contains altogether three accounts of the Mohican visit: the report by Thomson, the present account by Cooke, as well as an early general article, drawing on the results of the Mohican visit, by Walter Hough who was not a participant of the Mohican-expedition. These three reports reflect the increasing interest of the US-public in this small island in the Pacific. At the same time they represent valuable information of a phase of rapid change on Easter Island, its population and culture!
