About This Item
1901. MAIR, Charles. TECUMSEH: A DRAMA AND CANADIAN POEMS. Toronto: William Briggs, 1901. Small 8vo., decorative red cloth, stamped in black. Second Edition. "Tecumseh" was first published in Toronto in 1886 but sold out so quickly that it was never again available until this second edition came out in 1901. Signed inscription by Mair on the frontispiece" "With kind regard, C. Mair in Victoria, B.C. April 12th, 1927." The inscription appears below the printed facsimile inscription found in all copies. With the small, personal bookplate of Canadian author John Chancellor Boyles on the front pastedown. With a portrait of Mair (cut from a magazine) tipped to a front blank page, with the ink notation "Saturday Night, July 2, 1927." With a separate centenary newspaper article on Mair tipped to the rear endpaper. Uncommon to find an inscribed copy!! The author said he had often been asked to republish the original edition, especially a poem "Dreamland, and other Poems." Good (some wear covers & little fading spine; rear pastedown tanned from the newspaper article; repairs with archival tape to a few tiny tears on the top edge of pp. 211-216). $475.00.
