Viking, London, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic. Map of Australia, acknowledgements, list of plates, foreword by Michael Browne, introduction by Norman Hoffman and index. The text is illustrated with 16 pages of black and white photographs between pages 70 and 71. Pale yellow coloured boards with red coloured titles to the back strip. Photographic dustwrapper with pale yellow, orange and green coloured titles to the front panel and green and black coloured titles to the back strip. In 1947 Australia instituted the "assisted passage scheme" also known as Ten Pound Fare, so that people from England who fulfilled the immigration requirements could emigrate to Australia for almost nothing except for £10. This is a history of that scheme and some of the immigrants experiences. Rubbing of the book edges with tanning of the text block edges and pages. This is a review copy and has a sticker stating that attached to the front fold over panel blurb; also inserted loosely is a blurb about the book from the publishing house. A little creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the other edges and of the dustwrapper panels. Fading of the back strip. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
