About This Item
J. H. Colton, 1856. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 13" x 15.75".

Beautiful map of the Territories of New Mexico and Utah divided into counties. Shows towns, major routes and trails, proposed railroad lines and very detailed geographical features and waterways. A fascinating illustration of the changing western boundaries: Utah was granted statehood in 1896 and New Mexico and Arizona in 1912. Minor overall toning, small stain to lower left margin, creases to come corners. The Colton family was one the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. J.H. Colton (1800-1893) founded his business in NYC in 1831.
