Pander (1794-1865), balte de culture allemande, est connu pour avoir, le premier, énoncé la théorie selon laquelle l'embryon se forme à partir de membranes simples, les feuillets germinaux. Cette conception, aujourd'hui encore, est à la base de toute l'embryologie descriptive. D'un point de vue historique, elle a joué un rôle très important dans le triomphe de la théorie de l'épigenèse, selon laquelle le nouvel individu n'est pas préformé dans l'oeuf mais se forme progressivement à partir de structures relativement simples et grossières. En outre, cette vision d'une matière organique en train de s'auto-organiser devait conduire Pander sur la voie du transformisme, théorie qu'il allait contribuer à développer au cours des années 1820. C'est pourquoi les deux textes présentés ici revêtent un intérêt tout particulier dans l'histoire de la biologie.Ils ont joui d'une grande renommée au cours du XIXe siècle. Par la suite, ils ont été éclipsés par les travaux remarquables du compatriote et ami de Pander, Karl Ernst von Baer, qui d'ailleurs n'a jamais manqué de souligner tout ce qu'il devait à son prédecesseur. In 1976 Marc Van de Wiele rents a small shop in Prinsenhof, in Bruges. In 1977 he marries Anette. They move to the Sint-Salvatorskoorstraat, very close to the Simon Stévin square, a few years later.
In 1992, they buy and renovate a historical building on the corner of the Sint-Salvatorskerkhof and the Heilige Geeststraat.
Since forty years Marc Van de Wiele specialises in illustrated books from the 15th till the 20th century: books of hours, incunabula, natural history, atlases, medical books and books of artists. In 2004 Nathalie Van de Wiele (degree in romance languages) came into the business.
