About This Item

Boston, MA: Little, Brown and Company/Atlantic Monthly Press, (1964).. (1964).. Very good. WITH A TYPED LETTER SIGNED FROM ROBERT BRUSTEIN TO OSCAR CARGILL - Octavo, vermilion cloth in a dust wrapper. The binding is very slightly bumped. The dust jacket is lightly rubbed & chipped with a small area of soiling to the front edge of its rear panel. ix, [iii] & 435 pages. A few top page corners are bumped & there is a very light stain to the fore-edge. There are a few pencil markings, presumably by Oscar Cargill, in the margins of the first chapter. Very good.
First edition.
Laid in is a typed letter signed on "New Republic" letterhead from Robert Brustein to critic and New York University professor Oscar Cargill. The excellent content of the letter, which is dated 3 February 1965 and signed in full, includes thanks to Cargill for his close reading of the book and his generous remarks, as well as some discussion of the chapters on Sartre and Genet. "I do admit that Genet enjoyed the final chapter of the book not so much because of his central importance--which is less than that of most of the others--but because of a certain formal design that I had in mind. You were very clever to see that." He goes on to ask "How is Robert Corrigan working out?... I hear all kinds of interesting rumors about a creative arts program being started at NYU..." Corrigan was in fact instrumental in forming Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and became its first dean. In the early 1960s Cargill had attempted to lure the young Robert Brustein to NYU and away from his professorship at Columbia and his position as drama critic for the New Republic. Brustein, however, opted to remain at Columbia, later moving to Yale and then to Harvard.
