An early French treatise on the effectiveness of the smallpox vaccine from a member of the Société Médicale de Paris—published only a year after the Comité Central de Vaccine began its initial three year study on the matter. Ranque here is most concerned with addressing the natural hesitancy that attends the adoption of medical innovations—Jenner's new vaccine being the most contemporary example—and he attempts to calm these anxieties with a wide-ranging (and energetic) summary of facts. Specifically, Ranque is motivated to respond directly to the objections of the early anti-vax movement, as well as to illustrate the advantages (and similarities) of vaccination to the traditional practice of variolation. In a supplemental chapter, Ranque supplies translated excerpts from the writings of Edward Jenner; representing some of their earliest exposure in France. Uncommon, with 8 OCLC records located in North America; not all of them confirming the extra-illustrated plates.
