Penelope Green's New York Times book review, August 6 2008, opens with "At the Brimfield antiques fair, Richard Todd, an essayist and editor, bought a small box with peeling pink paint and rusty nail holes for $200. Its sellers, who had a booth of 18th- and 19th-century New England furniture, never said anything about its provenance, but the implication was that it was from the same period. But Mr. Todd lost his faith in the box he had found so fetching after a dealer friend pronounced it a cunning fake, a deliberately "antiqued" object, chemically aged and worked over to look old. The box, Mr. Todd concluded, was a liar, and he began to examine why its duplicity mattered to him. If what we value is authenticity, what is the promise of that word, and how do our objects, experiences and relationships deliver on that promise?"

Synopsis

The celebrated literary memoir and chronicle of one man's search for the elusive gift of authenticity. Troubled by the lack of substance in contemporary life, Richard Todd suspects that much of what we experience is false. In this unique pursuit of the "genuine," Todd examines his search for authenticity in places and objects, in politics and ideas, and in ourselves, and recounts his efforts to understand the desire to be a real person in a real world.
