About This Item
New York:: Viking Press, 1956.. 1st Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: khaki colored cloth with red text and vignette; a Good book, no dust jacket.. 10.25 inches tall by 7 inches wide . Illustrated endpapers. Description: Illustrated in color throughout by Don Freeman (known for his Corduroy books and as the illustrator for William Saroyan's novels). All the monkeys in Monkey Village are in a tizzy. Something has happened that has never happed before. Mother Monkey has not just one baby monkey, not just two, but THREE baby monkeys. Third Monkey is treated well by the older monkeys, but not at all well by the young ones. They tease him. They say 'You are little and ugly and the third one.'' One day Third Monkey has enough of this and decides he will no longer do monkey things. He will leave and be different. But the more he tries to be different, the more he ends up acting just like a monkey. While Third Monkey is away learning about himself, the Monkey Village realizes they miss him and remember his good traits. When Old Leader tells the village that he is growing old and they must choose a new leader, they realize that Third Monkey's good qualities combined with his newfound wisdom make him the best choice.
