About This Item

New York: D. Appleton, 1864. First Edition, first state. Original cloth; bookplate, extremities a little rubbed; very good to fine. BAL 1863; first state; binding B (noted on presentation copies). Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, “Mrs. D.D. Field, with the kind regards of William Cullen Bryant, January, 1864”. The recipient was presumably the spouse of the prominent attorney, and therefore the sister-in-law of Cyrus Field, who was responsible for the first Atlantic cable.
