About This Item

NY: W. W. Norton Book. Very Good. Hardcover. (1974), 591pp, index, illustrated, extensive bibliography. VG in G+ lightly worn dj. With great detail the author examines this complex individual and his ambivalences concerning revolution, religion, power, race, and love. I believe that Jefferson's authorship of the Declaration of Independence, aside from any other accomplishments, warranted his inclusion on Mt. Rushmore. And, of course, it was during his administration that the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery set out to see exactly what we had purchased. But Jefferson seemed to be a bundle of contradictions, whose private and public lives were at great odds; much in his private life not holding up well to scrutiny. There is a quote by Alfred Adler on a piece of newspaper that a previous owner was using for a bookmark, that perhaps sums up Jefferson as he comes across in this biography: "It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them.".
