About This Item

St. Paul, MN: Llewellyn Publications, 1973. First Edition Thus. Very Good+. First Edition Thus. The US printed first edition of Crowley's masterwork of tarot, with color reproductions of the card designs by Frieda Harris, artist and book designer. Crowley's exemplary work on tarot and the study of Kabbalistic magic(k) setting the stage for ritual and divination practice continuing into the esoteric, neopagan witchcraft movements of the 1950-1960s. One of the most important presentations of the reinterpreted Demotic texts of Egyptology and well-known applicable Hermetic ritual texts interloping Ptolemaic period texts and Occult Revival Rosicrucianism with practical magick.
The 78 card deck reflects the major points of the "Llewellyn Deck" first printing "B" 1: Llewellyn Publications followed the First Hong Kong Printing with two "Printed in U.S.A." corrected printings, improving on the Hong Kong printing with heavier card stock, and slightly better color using two-part color separation (It wasn't until 1978's U.S. Games Edition that four-part color separation was used, much enhancing the quality). The First "corrected" U.S.A. printing, "now in their second printing." ("The Gnostica News", Vol. 2, No. 5, March 21st, 1973), still lacked the numeral "8" on the Eight of Cups "Indolence" card, with the "Ace of Discs" still inverted, was corrected in the Third Llewelyn printing. 78 tarot cards + "Caliph Card". Card size 5 1/2" x 3 3/4". This is the Llewellyn publication of the Thoth Tarot deck (sometimes known as "White Box B") In first and early printings of the Weiser "White Box B" the PO Box number on that card is 2043 wheras it was changed in later printings., powder blue borders to all the cards, although some of the cards are washed out pale.) The decorative verso of the faces are without borders. The deck is lacking the blue printed card and no accompanying booklet. --[Bart Deleplanque - Thoth Tarot White Boxes.]
"Frieda, Lady Harris, wife of Sir Percy Harris, Liberal M.P. and party Chief Whip, created the magnificent Tarot paintings that underpin Aleister Crowley's The Book of Thoth. Harris conformed to the conventional appearance of a respectable middle-class lady until she was in her sixties. However, her unwavering commitment to Aleister Crowley and the Tarot project eventually threatened not only her social standing, but also her marriage. Despite her dedication to the Thoth Tarot, she never fully engaged with Thelema, which she anthropomorphised as the bossy and interfering ‘Miss Thelema'. Nevertheless, she progressed through the grades of Crowley's magical orders and remained loyal to Crowley and the Great Work to the end of her days, endeavouring to secure a publishing deal for a general release of The Book of Thoth and the Thoth Tarot deck." ("Frieda Harris's Perception of Thelema" [In: Aries, Deja Whitehouse, 14 Dec 2020]. Minimal rubbing, scuffing and wear to housing, some creasing and age toning, else bright and unmarred. White imprint card with a few creases. Original printed outer slipcase with thumb-notches, cardboard inner box with gilt metallic finish covering and thumb notches. The first full-color version of the Thoth tarot deck to be printed in the USA.
