About This Item

New York: George H. Doran Company. Good. 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket, but enfolded by a new professionally-produced FACSIMILE dust jacket) [moderately shelfworn, age-toning and light soiling to edges of text block, front hinge a little weak, rear endpaper roughly removed; stamped "Goldwyn Production Corporation / Goldwyn Pictures / Library" on front endpaper and both pastedowns]. Romantic hijinks aboard a White Star ocean liner, as three suitors vie for the affections of the titular maid during a transAtlantic crossing. The Ameican edition was actually the true first, published in April 1922, with the British edition (under the title "The Girl on the Boat") following in June. Although the Goldwyn Pictures stamping sources this copy to their library in the early 1920s, no film adaptation of this book (or any other by Wodehouse) was ever produced by Goldwyn; a 1962 film adaptation, starring Norman Wisdom and Millicent Martin, used the British title. Please NOTE that although this book comes with a new FACSIMILE dust jacket (see second scanned image), this has not been factored into our pricing; it's a freebie. .

Synopsis

Through the curtained windows of the furnished apartment which Mrs. Horace Hignett had rented for her stay in New York rays of golden sunlight peeped in like the foremost spies of some advancing army. It was a fine summer morning. The hands of the Dutch clock in the hall pointed to thirteen minutes past nine; those of the ormolu clock in the sitting-room to eleven minutes past ten; those of the carriage clock on the bookshelf to fourteen minutes to six.
