About This Item

Ex-library book with no DJ, the spine crown and foot have been reinforced, the cloth-covered boards show some wear and have a few wet stains. The binding is tight, textblock pages are clean of marks besides library stamps and perforations, front flyleaf has a tape-reinforced tear. The frontispiece is an 1862 photo which includes Lewis Carroll, Mrs. George MacDonald, and a number of children; there are black and white reproductions of children's book illustrations throughout. The Index lists authors, titles and illustrators mentioned in the text.

The author was one of the first reviewers of juvenile books -- she contributed to the monthly magazine The Bookman, edited a weekly page on children's books for the New York Herald Tribune, and contributed to The Atlantic Monthly and The Horn Book Magazine.

This book is standard reference for children's literature, with chapters devoted to Walter de la Mare, Kate Greenaway, Randolph Caldecott, Padraic Colum and more; critics include Padraic Colum, Louis Untermeyer, Henry Beston. Librarians and children's literature experts of the time suggest and discuss books for holidays, plays, adventure and travel, picture books and books for little children.
