Three Years in California, Rev. Walter Colton, U. S. N., New York, A. S. Barnes & Co., 1850, 456 pp., 12mo. First edition. Fair+ condition. Embossed cloth binding with gilt-stamped cover (California state seal) and spine. Rubbed, bumped, chipped, with foxing and blurred inscription, "Sylvester Hosmer Book $6.29[?] Sylvester Hosmer Book Bought Sept. 1850". Inscription on front pastedown reads, "J. A. Leermaler 1938". Folded facsimile of the California Declaration of Rights attached and in very good condition. Before Colton's early death in 1851 at the age of 54 he had careers as Theologian, Editor, U.S.N. Chaplain and Alcalde (governor) of California during the Mexican-American War and California Gold Rush prior to statehood. (Sabin 14800)
