About This Item
Madras, Benares and London: The Theosophist Office and the Theosophical Publishing Society, 1909. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. FIRST PRINTING of First Edition. 246mm tall x 152mm, fully bound in ribbed navy cloth, white paper title patch on spine, brown marbled EPs. The first printing of the book was issued in a hardcover binding and in wrapper for custom binding. This was most likely the wrappers issue that was subsequently bound since there is no TEG. All of the original hardcover versions of the first printing that I have examined had TEG while all of the wrapper versions of the first printing did not have TEG. The book has 719 pages, 63 b/w illustrations, 11 photogravures (1 folding of Mt. Everest -- not a very high quality image), folding map. The photo of Everest is captioned, "Mount Gaurishankara, The Highest Peak In The World." But the image negative itself is printed on left side with "No 78 Mt EVEREST FROM SANDAKPHY" and on other side "TH. PAAR DARJEELING." CONDITION: two small faint smudges rear cover, strange bit of small writing on blank verso of last page of the table of contents: "xxxxx - We should. The Great Astral Adventurers" plus some offsetting on the page where something had been tipped-in (see photo). Pen lines in margins of 8 pages and penned note on two of these 8 pages (see photos), no other writing or marks on pages, NOT ex-library, complete with all plates and maps, folding map is in fine condition, foxing opposite the two tissue-guarded plates and foxing on the two tissues, tiny bit of foxing on short title page, otherwise no foxing, rather plain binding but solid and clean. THE PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
