Dyed upper text edges; rough cut leading edges. First published 1914; this is a reprint of 1925. Travelogue of sportsman and the 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919) in a scientific exploration in Brazilian hinterlands with co-leader Colonel Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon which took place on the completion of the presidential term. The expedition was primarily concerned with mammals and birds on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History. Roosevelt in ill health during the expedition, though he makes no mention of it in his journal. 10 chapters: I, The Start; II, Up the Paraguay; III, A Jaguar-Hunt on the Taquary; IV, The Heawaters of the Paraguay; V, Up the River of Tapirs; VI, Through the Highland Wilderness of Western Brazil; VII, With a Mule-Train Across Nhambiquara Land; VIII, The River of Doubt; IX, Down an Unknown River into the Equatorial Forest; and, X, To the Amazon & Home: Zoological & Geographical Results of the Expedition, followed by 3 appendices.
