London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1883. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. The bevelled boards are faded and shelfrubbed with some discol. The outer corners are very rubbed and there is rubbing to the edges. Gilt titling to front and spine. The spine has some blistering and incipient splitting at the edges. Both joints have cracks and the ffep and frontis. are missing. A prev owner's name and address to the half-title. The half-title has discol. caused by the facing black pastedown. The illus. to face p. 180 is missing.The illus. facing p. 226 is detached and the one facing p. 258 is rubbed at the outer edge. [xi] + 323pp. + 38pp. catalogue. The leaf bearing pp. 247/8 has a jagged closed tear at the top inner corner. Apart from an occasional smudge mark the contents are unmarked and largely undiscoloured. Other than with the illus. the binding is secure. Good considering age.
