About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1952. First edition. 8vo, 346pp. Quarter cream cloth stamped in blue and black over blue paper boards, top edge stained black. Signed and inscribed by Thurber "For Jack Sullivan, Happy Days, Jim Thurber," on the ffep. Dr. John Sullivan was a family doctor to the Thurbers. Very good with wear and fraying at corners and spine ends, edges of boards toned and rubbed. Toning to endpapers else clean internally. Jacket chipped along edges, folds, and at corners. Some smudging to rear panel and spine sun faded. Original price of $3.50 in tact. Inscribed first printing of this collection from the American cartoonist and humorist, on the cover of which is printed the last drawing he completed, a self portrait. The work is a collection of stories, many autobiographical, with a gallery of photographs at the end of various people with whom he had encounters. Most of the stories are reprinted from his time as a contributor to The New Yorker.
