About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1973. First edition. Near fine in near-fine jacket.. First printing of the second Jahdu book of Harlem-based mythologies - this copy inscribed by Hamilton to Elizabeth Shub, one of the editors with whom Hamilton was working on M.C. HIGGINS, THE GREAT which would go on to win the Newbery Medal. Early in her career, Hamilton released her first Jahdu book, THE TIME-AGO TALES OF JAHDU to much acclaim. Over the years, she added more stories about her beloved trickster; this was the first entry in what would become something of a leitmotif publication in Hamilton's career. This copy came from the library of editor Elizabeth Shub, and is inscribed by Hamilton to her as "Libby." Shub was thanked by Hamilton by name in Hamilton's Newbery Medal acceptance speech for M.C. HIGGINS, THE GREAT, published the year after this book's publication - and the first book by a Black author to win the Medal. 9'' x 7''. Original brown cloth lettered in black. In original unclipped ($4.95) tan pictorial dust jacket with title in red. Illustrated by Prather with full- and partial-page black-and-white images. [8], 85, [3] pages. Inscribed by Hamilton on half title: "For Libby, / With happiness & with love, / Virginia." Head of spine lightly bumped, else clean and fresh.
