About This Item

Saratoga Springs, New York: A. E. Alden, 1870. Tintype photographs are relatively common, but stereo tintypes are, according to Darrah, "the rarest form of stereograph." The circa 1870 tintype stereoview offered here depicts a group of unidentified people posing for the photographer. On the verso of the mount is the photographer's label for Augustus Ephraim Alden, with studios in Providence, Rhode Island; Troy, New York; and Saratoga Springs, New York. The few Alden tintype stereoviews that have turned up in recent years have been identified as having been photographed in Saratoga Springs; that is the case with this one in which the people are standing in front of the Congress Springs Pavilion. Built during the 1830s, the Greek Revival pavilion was removed when the park was redesigned by Frederick Law Olmsted circa 1875-1880. I have viewed the image in a stereoscope, and the 3-dimensional effect is remarkable. The stereoview is in excellent condition, in a mount that has foxing on the verso.. First Edition. Very Good+. Illus. by A. E. Alden. Photo.
